Abstract

We report a simple and practical approach for the easy production of superhydrophobic coatings based on TiO2-SiO2@PDMS. In this study, we used tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor for the sol-gel synthesis of SiO2 and TiO2, respectively. Afterward, the surface of nanoparticles was modified by 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) before being combined with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The hydrophobic property of coatings was evaluated by static contact angle measurements. The phase composition and structural evolution of the coatings were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. It was shown that changing the weight ratio of the solution composition of the coating can affect the hydrophobicity of the surface. The best sample has shown a superhydrophobic property with a 153˚ contact angle which contained (75%TiO2-25%SiO2) and PDMS at a weight ratio of 1:1. Moreover, the results showed that the superhydrophobic coating retains its hydrophobic properties up to a temperature of 450 ˚C, and at higher temperatures, it converts to a super hydrophilic with a water contact angle close to 0 ˚. The SiO2-TiO2@PDMS coating degrades methylene blue by about 55% and was shown to be capable of photocatalytically decomposing organic pollutants.

Abstract

In this research, after pressing in a cylindrical mold, the AA 7075 alloy swarf was melted and cast in a wet sand mold. After rolling and cutting, sheets with two different thicknesses of 6 and 20 mm were obtained. The sheets after homogenization were solutionized at 485°C for 30 and 90 minutes, respectively, due to differences in thickness and thermal gradients. The solutionized samples were quenched in 3 polymer solutions containing 10, 30, and 50% Poly Alekylene Glycol. The results showed that melting, casting, rolling, and heat treatment of AA7075 alloy swarf similar properties to this alloy is achievable. Microstructural studies by optical microscopes (OM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that by increasing the quenching rate after the solutionizing process, precipitation increases during aging. The tensile test results indicated that as the quench rate and internal energy increase, the diffusion driving force would increase the precipitation of alloying elements. Hence, this leads to an increase in hardness and reduction of its strain after aging.

Abstract

Elevating component performance through advanced surface coatings finds its epitome in the domain of laser cladding technology. This technique facilitates the precision deposition of metallic, ceramic, or cermet coatings, accentuating their superiority over conventional methods. The application spectrum for laser-clad metallic coatings is extensive, encompassing critical components. Central to the efficacy of laser cladding is the modulation of laser parameters—encompassing power, speed, and gas flow—which decisively influence both process efficiency and coating properties. The meticulous calibration of these parameters holds the key to producing components endowed with refined attributes while ensuring the sustainable continuation of the process. As such, this study embarks on an empirical investigation aimed at transcending existing process limitations. It delves into the characterization of laser-clad WC-17Co coatings on AISI H13 and AISI 4140 steels. The importance of WC-17Co coatings lies in their capacity to enhance wear resistance, extend component life, reduce maintenance costs, and improve the performance of various industrial components across diverse sectors. On the other hand, the substrates have pivotal roles. AISI H13 is lauded for its exceptional hot work capabilities, while AISI 4140 steel is renowned for its robust strength and endurance. Through rigorous evaluation, the resultant deposited coatings offer crucial insights into the efficacy of manufacturing parameters. Employing a comprehensive suite of analytical techniques including laser confocal microscopy, Vickers microhardness assessment, and micro-adhesive wear testing, the study thoroughly characterizes the samples. The outcomes underscore the achievement of homogenous coatings marked by elevated hardness and exceptional wear resistance, thereby signifying a substantial enhancement over the substrate materials.

Abstract

Abstract. Hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold is commonly used in the applications of bone tissue engineering due to its bioactivity and equivalent chemical composition to the inorganic constituents of human bone. The present study focused on the fabrication of porous 3D hydroxyapatite scaffold which was modified by polymer coating as a successful strategy to improve the mechanical properties. A 3D porous hydroxyapatite scaffolds were fabricated by gel-casting method by using freshly extracted egg yolk (EY) with (50 and 60)wt% of HA powder. To enhance the mechanical properties, composite PVA/ HA scaffolds were produced by using dip coating in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to recognize the functional group associated with the hydroxyapatite scaffolds before and after PVA coating. The physical (density and porosity) and mechanical (compressive strength and elastic modulus) properties were investigated before and after coating. SEM was used to inspect the surface morphology and pore modification of the scaffolds. Wettability was determined by using a water contact angle to analyze the scaffold hydrophobicity. Surface roughness was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was revealed that the scaffold porosity decreased with increase solid loading of HA powder in the gel and after PVA coating. The findings showed that PVA coating improved mechanical strength of scaffold to be double by covering the small pores and filling microcracks sited on the scaffold strut surfaces, inducing a crack bridging mechanism. The scaffolds’ strength was in the range of trabecular bone strength. This indicates  non-load bearing applications.

Abstract

In the present work, development models of a new artificial human soft heart and artificial heart valves using nanocomposite materials and synthetics were designed, manufactured, and tested. The fabricated mechanical artificial heart valves were examined to determine the best service life for each type. The fatigue life results were implemented by using the transient repeated and continuously applied blood pressure on each produced value to simulate diastolic and systolic that occur in the natural heart at each pulse cycle. The obtained results showed that a 3D printing of a new generation soft artificial heart for a permanent replacement was implemented as an alternative to the high-cost available temporary implant mechanical hearts, which may exceed the price by tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, with a working life of not more than five years. The obtained fatigue safety factors for the produced artificial valves using different materials and designs were decreased with the complexity of the movement of the moving parts of the valve. The highest rates were obtained when using the valves with flat, simple movement in one direction like the single-leaflet type valve, where all the used materials are suitable for the production of this type of valve. The highest obtained safety factor was reached (15). The lowest rates were recorded when using the highly flexible and strong PSN4 nanocomposite material for fabricating the mitral tri-leaflet valve (thick. = 1.0 mm) reached 1.91. This value decreases to 0.99 when using the same type and material of valve but with a thickness equal to 0.5 mm. It can be noted here that the only suitable for the manufacture of this artificial valve type is the nanocomposite polyetherimide/ silicone rubber with nano silica (PSN4), whereas the other used materials failed because the fatigue factor values are less than 1. The service life span of this material is about 9200 x 106 cycles, which is equivalent to about 290 years, followed by SIBSTAR 103 with a default age of 209.6 x 106 cycles or 9 years.

Abstract

The coated β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) with dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) has attracted much attention in the biomaterials field due to the increase in its osteoconductivity. Besides, the porous bioceramic scaffolds with controlled pore sizes are significant in stimulating bone-like cell activity. In this study, the effect of the setting-time process and acidic-calcium phosphate (CaP) concentrations on the fabrication and properties of porous DCPD/ β-TCP scaffolds were studied. Subsequently, the specimens were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compression strength and Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR). The study results revealed that the porous DCPD/ β-TCP scaffolds with macro- and micropore sizes were successfully obtained after the 300-600 µm of porous β-TCP granules were exposed to an acidic-CaP solution. Furthermore, the setting-time process and acidic-CaP concentrations increased the DCPD interlocking between granules, and the mechanical strengths of scaffolds increased up to 0.5 MPa. Meanwhile, the porosity levels were changed based on the formation of DCPD crystals. This study was expected to provide novel insights to researchers in the field of bioceramics through its investigation on the creation of porous DCPD/ β-TCP scaffolds.

Abstract

In this research, a nickel-tungsten coating as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with different current densities was synthesized and the resulting electrocatalytic properties and morphology were assessed. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry in 1 M NaOH were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic activity for HER. By increasing the current density of electrodeposition up to 500 mA/cm2, a columnar morphology was observed. The cyclic voltammetry test (CV) revealed that when the plating current density increases, Cdl has increased from 248 to 1310 µF/cm2 and the active surface area increases 5 times. The results showed that by modifying the coating morphology, the current density of the hydrogen evolution increased up to two times.

Abstract

Acrylic resins are one of the most important thermoplastic resins used in various industries due to their significant properties. However, they are inherently brittle and addition plasticizers to them is very common. In this study, role of both Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Triacetin on the mechanical properties of acrylic resin have been investigated. To do so tensile test, bending and wear tests have been performed. To achieve the optimal mixture of plasticizers, a tensile test has been carried out, and the best percentage of the mixture has been determined. Subsequently, bending and wear tests were conducted, which showed a significant increase in the bending strength of the acrylic resin after the addition of plasticizers. Furthermore, it was found that the abrasion mechanism of the resin was significantly altered compared to its pure state.

Abstract

Abstract
The power line insulators are permanently exposed to various environmental pollutants such as dust and fine particles. This may lead to flashovers and therefore widespread power blackouts and heavy economic damage. One way to overcome this problem is to make the insulator surface superhydrophobic. In this research, the superhydrophobic properties of the insulators were improved by applying room-temperature cured composite coatings consisting of epoxy and hydrophobic nano-silica particles. Either octadecyl trichlorosilane (ODTS) or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) was used to coat the silica nanoparticles and make them hydrophobic. Then, the hydrophobic silica was added to a mixture of epoxy resin and hardener. The suspension was applied on the surfaces of a commercial porcelain insulator and cold cured at ambient temperature. The coating increased the water contact angle from 50° to 149°. Even after 244 h exposure to the UV light, the samples preserved their hydrophobic properties. The adhesion of the coating was rated as 4B according to the ASTM D3359 standard. The coating decreased the leakage current by 40% and increased the breakdown voltage by 86% compared to the uncoated sample and showed promise for making power line insulators self-cleaning.

Abstract

Magnesium alloys are increasingly valued for biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility. This study investigates Mg-AZ31B alloy samples treated with quartz and alumina grits (<200 μm) at varied pressures, followed by anodization in an eco-friendly alkaline electrolyte. The results show that increased blasting pressure produces a rougher surface. Anodization time significantly affects the thickness of the anodic film, leading to a transition in surface morphology from fine to coarse structures with complete film coverage. Characterization by XRD reveals that the anodic film mainly comprises magnesium oxide and hydroxide phases. Open Circuit Potential (OCP) measurements demonstrate enhanced corrosion resistance post-anodization, particularly notable at 40 minutes on alumina-blasted samples. ANOVA confirms that both blasting pressure and anodization time significantly influence coating thickness and OCP, indicating the formation of a dense anodized layer.

Abstract

In this study, we thoroughly examine β-Bi2O3 thin films as potential photocatalysts. We produced these films using an environmentally friendly Sol Gel method that is also cost-effective. Our research focuses on how different precursor concentrations, ranging from 0.1 M to 0.4 M, affect the photocatalytic performance of these films. We conducted a comprehensive set of tests to analyze various aspects of the films, including their structure, morphology, topography, optical properties, wettability, and photocatalytic capabilities. These tests provided us with a well-rounded understanding of the films' characteristics. To assess their photocatalytic efficiency, we used Methylene Blue (MB) as a contaminant and found that the films, particularly those with a 0.1 M concentration, achieved an impressive 99.9% degradation of MB within four hours. The 0.1 M film had a crystalline size of 39.7 nm, an indirect band gap of 2.99 eV, and a contact angle of 51.37°. Our findings suggest that β-Bi2O3 films, especially the 0.1 M variant, have promising potential for treating effluents from complex industrial dye processes. This research marks a significant step in utilizing sustainable materials to address pollution and environmental remediation challenges.

Abstract

In this research study, a composite coating of Ni-Co/SiC-CeO2 was prepared on a copper substrate using the pulse electrodeposition technique. The effects of electrodeposition parameters, including current density, duty cycle, and frequency, on the properties of the prepared coating were investigated. The selected current density values were 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 A/cm2, the duty cycle options were 10, 20, and 30%, and the frequency values were 10, 100, and 1000 Hz. Increasing the current density enhanced the microhardness of the coating but reduced its corrosion resistance. This behavior can be attributed to the grain refinement occurring within the coating as the current density increases. On the other hand, an increase in duty cycle resulted in a decrease in microhardness, which can be attributed to a decrease in the concentration of nanoparticles within the coating. The lower corrosion resistance observed at higher duty cycles could be attributed to the decrease in off-time, causing the pulse electrodeposition conditions to approach a DC (direct current) state. Furthermore, higher frequencies were found to be associated with increased microhardness and improved corrosion resistance of the coatings. The coatings with the highest corrosion resistance exhibited a corrosion current density of 0.29 µA/cm2 and a polarization resistance of 1063 Ω.cm2 in a 3.5% NaCl solution. These coatings were prepared using a current density of 0.2 A/cm2, a duty cycle of 10%, and a frequency of 1000 Hz.

Abstract

In this research, the morphology of the Ni-W coating was modified by adding graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in such a way that a foam-like structure with high porosity and holes in the form of intertwined tunnels was obtained. Different amounts of GO nanosheets were added to the plating bath and the resulting coating was examined. In order to estimate the electrochemically active surface area, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) test was used. Moreover, the linear polarization test (LSV) and chronoamperometry in 1 M NaOH were conducted to investigate the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It was found that by adding 0.4 g/L GO to the electroplating bath, the electrocatalytic properties are doubled and the active surface of the electrode is significantly increased.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of current density on the microstructure of electrodeposited Ni–WC–TiC composite coatings on 304 stainless steel and compare the corrosion resistance of the coating and substrate in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride solution. A Watts nickel bath was employed under direct current (DC) conditions. Microstructure, elemental composition, and phase composition analyses were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results revealed that the coating formed at a current density of 40 mA/cm² exhibited a denser microstructure with higher cohesion and uniformity compared to coatings produced at other current densities. The corrosion resistance of the coating and substrate was evaluated using Tafel and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The corrosion test results indicated that the substrate exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared to the coating. Based on the dynamic polarization test plots, the corrosion mechanism of the substrate is active-quasi passive, with a pseudo-passive layer forming on the sample which remains stable within the potential range of -0.17 to 0.17 V. Beyond this potential range, the sample becomes susceptible to pitting. In the coated sample, the corrosion behavior is similar to that of the substrate, with the exception that the pseudo-passive layer remains stable within a narrower potential range of -0.19 to 0.08 V.

Abstract

Ni-B4C nanocomposite coatings were deposited onto a pure Cu substrate using electroplating. Different types of current, including direct current (DC), pulse reverse current (PRC), and unipolar pulse current (PC), were applied using various concentrations of micron and nano size particles in the electroplating bath. Microstructure, hardness, and wear and corrosion behavior of the coatings were investigated. Microstructural evaluations were performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Microhardness, pin-on-disk sliding wear, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests were conducted on the coatings. Electrodeposition using PRC resulted in a more uniform distribution of co-deposited B4C microparticles and nanoparticles within the coatings. Nanocomposite coatings reinforced with B4C nanoparticles were obtained using PRC with a bath concentration of 8 g/l, exhibited higher hardness and improved wear properties compared to composite coatings containing B4C micron-sized particles. Moreover, using PRC resulted in higher hardness values and improved wear and corrosion resistance compared to PC and DC.

Abstract

The crystallization behavior and photocatalytic properties of the sol-gel derived glass ceramic coatings in the TiO2-SiO2-B2O3 system were studied. the prepared sol was sprayed on a glazed ceramic wall. Following drying, the coated specimens were fired at 900°C for 1 h. The impact of boron oxide content in the composition was explored in terms of anatase stability and glass maturing temperature. The thermal and crystallization behaviors of the dried gels were studied by the STA, XRD, and FESEM. The photocatalytic property of the coated layer was examined using methylen blue degradation. Based on the results, the sample containing 15 wt% of boron oxide demonestrated about  30% dye removal efficiency, after only 60 min of UV-irradiation. Additionally, this particular sample exhibited the greatest magnitude of the anatase phase in comparison to the other samples.

Abstract

Selective laser melting (SLM) is a widely used additive manufacturing method for 3D-printing metal parts. This study investigates how SLM parameters affect the density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of maraging steel 300. A process window was developed, revealing that maximum density and minimal porosity are achieved when laser energy density exceeds 50 J/mm³. Optimal parameters—100 mm/s scan speed, 20 μm layer thickness, 0.15 mm hatch distance, Stripe scanning strategy, and XZ build direction—were identified. Optimal processing reduced porosity, increased martensite content, and enhanced strength, reaching 1064 MPa and improving by 75% to 1862 MPa after aging and solution treatment. Strength gains were attributed to the uniform dispersion of nano-sized precipitates (such as Ni(Mo)3 and Ni(Ti, Al)3) within the martensitic matrix. Additionally, it was found that higher cooling rates further improve the mechanical strength of heat-treated parts.

Abstract

This study systematically investigates the crystallization behavior, phase evolution, and dielectric properties of a BaO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ glass system modified with 10 wt% TiO₂. Thermal characterization revealed that TiO₂ addition notably reduced the glass transition temperature (from 781.6°C to 779.4°C) and softening point (from 838°C to 824.8°C) compared to the TiO₂-free glass, consequently decreasing the calculated nucleation temperature (from 810°C to 800°C). While differential thermal analysis indicated sluggish crystallization kinetics, isothermal heat treatments identified 1000°C as the optimal processing temperature, leading to the development of a multiphase crystalline assemblage that beneficially included the target monoclinic Ba3.75Al7.5Si8.5O32 phase, which was absent in the TiO₂-free glass. X-ray diffraction identified this phase, along with celsian (BaAl₂Si₂O8) polymorphs and barium titanate crystallites, as the dominant crystalline phases. SEM revealed anisotropic crystal growth (1.14-1.52 μm length). Dielectric characterization in the Ku-band (12.4-18 GHz) demonstrated significant property enhancements, with the relative permittivity decreasing from 10.40 to 6.38 and loss tangent improving from 0.3 to 0.2 after crystallization. These improvements, attributed to the specifically tailored crystalline phase assemblage facilitated by TiO₂, make this glass-ceramic system particularly suitable for advanced microwave applications requiring low dielectric loss and high-frequency stability. The effectiveness of TiO₂ as a crystallization modifier for achieving optimized dielectric properties through controlled devitrification and targeted phase formation is underscored.

Abstract

Aluminide coatings are widely used in high-temperature applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance and thermal stability. However, optimizing their composition and thickness is crucial for enhancing performance under varying operational conditions. This study investigates the optimization of aluminide coatings through a data-driven approach, aiming to predict the coating thickness based on various composition and process parameters. A comparative analysis of six machine learning models was conducted, with the k-nearest neighbors regressor (KNNR) demonstrating the highest predictive accuracy, yielding a coefficient of determination R² of 0.78, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 18.02 µm, and mean absolute error (MAE) of 14.42. The study incorporates SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) analysis to identify the most influential factors in coating thickness prediction. The results indicate that aluminum content (Al), ammonium chloride content (NH4Cl), and silicon content (Si) significantly impact the coating thickness, with higher Al and Si concentrations leading to thicker coatings. Zirconia (ZrO2) content was found to decrease thickness due to competitive reactions that hinder Al deposition. Furthermore, the level of activity in the aluminizing process plays a crucial role, with high-activity processes yielding thicker coatings due to faster Al diffusion. The pack cementation method, in particular, produced the thickest coatings, followed by gas-phase and out-of-pack methods. These findings emphasize the importance of optimizing composition and processing conditions to achieve durable, high-performance aluminide coatings for high-temperature applications.
